French toast roll-ups in a pile.

We love French toast any way we can get it, whether it’s vegan French toast, Nutella French toast, strawberry cream cheese stuffed french toast, or apple French toast casserole. But if you’re looking for a French toast recipe that will really wow your family, this recipe for French toast roll-ups is it! Think: stuffed French toast, but instead of spreading a filling between two slices of bread, it’s rolled right in.

Rolling in the filling gives these French toast roll-ups a little more visual appeal than your traditional stuffed French toast, and it makes this recipe perfect for kids to help with. They will love flattening the bread, spreading on the cream cheese, and rolling it all together. (And you will love that this is a recipe where the kids can help without needing a lot of supervision. Win!)

About this French toast roll-up recipe

What you need

  • Cream cheese – This should be at room temperature. Use the kind that comes in a block, not a tub.
  • Powdered sugar – Also known as confectioners’ sugar.
  • Ground cinnamon & granulated sugar – this will be used to make cinnamon sugar to roll the roll-ups in.
  • White bread – You’ll need a bread that can easily be rolled; white sandwich bread is perfect, as are Japanese milk bread, brioche, or pain de mie.

FAQs

What type of bread is best for French toast?

You can use everything from tender challah to rustic sourdough and crusty French baguettes for French toast. With this particular recipe, you want a soft bread that will roll up without crumbling, so white sandwich bread, brioche, and pain de mie work well.

What is the ratio of milk to eggs for French toast?

Use 1/4 cup of milk for every egg in French toast. This is enough to coat two slices of bread, so you can scale up from there as needed.

How to make these French toast roll-ups your own

We love these French toast roll-ups just the way they are, but there are also a number of different variations that you can try!

  • Make it a little more healthy. Use a soft whole wheat sandwich bread to up the whole grains in this recipe.
  • Make it more decadent. Swap the cream cheese for Nutella for a sweet treat breakfast! You could also fold mini chocolate chips into the cream cheese mixture. Or, try topping with a cream cheese glaze.
  • Make it fruity. Use a smaller amount of the cream cheese filling; after spreading it onto the bread, top it with a thin layer of blueberry sauce or fried apples.
